The unconstitutional nature of US politicians’ latest calls for curbs to speech

Once again, high-ranking US officials are exhibiting a poor understanding of the Constitution they’ve sworn to protect, specifically where it concerns a topic as crucial for any democracy as free speech.

These lapses as a rule happen during crises or major incidents, the latest example being the Buffalo mass shooting, an event characterized as a racism-fueled massacre. It’s the type of tragedy whose causes New York Governor Kathy Hochul believes should be addressed by curtailing free speech.
