Since the election, the level of overt Big Tech censorship has been unprecedented with Facebook shutting down large groups and putting users on “probation” and Twitter’s post-election censorship measures cutting overall retweets and quote tweets on the platform by 20%.
But during a recent Senate Committee hearing, Senator Josh Hawley’s revelations about “Centra,” an internal surveillance tool at Facebook, served as a chilling reminder that these displays of overt censorship represent just a fraction of Big Techs’ overall censorship power.
