
Facebook has the ability to surveil popular users in a finely grained and intrusive manner, including by mapping their motivations, frustrations and signals over the course of their usage of the site, documents have revealed.
This gives the world's largest social media operation the ability to create timelines of such users' activity on the platform that provides a detailed picture, something the company refers to as "user journey maps."
The redacted documents are a part of those handed to Congress by former Facebook employee Frances Haugen and show how the giant's Central Integrity team was able to track activities of two users selected for an internal project. The time period covered 14 years, and the two users were picked as part of a Facebook presentation into "harmful conspiracy theories," whose apparent goal was to define such conspiracies, and explore features and personas behind them.
Now, a group of media outlets have been allowed access to the said presentation and some have chosen to focus on the two individuals themselves, whose presence on the site Facebook decided to analyze in great detail - because they have been labeled as radicalized peddlers of huge amounts of misinformation - concerning forbidden topics like the integrity of the US election, vaccine skepticism animosity towards Big Pharma, and acceptance of QAnon theories.
