A Newsweek editor has been demoted after the controversy surrounding an article that was published on Thanksgiving day that originally said that President Trump would spend Thanksgiving tweeting and playing golf.
The president actually spent it in Afghanistan with the troops.
“The editor was demoted,” a spokesperson for Newsweek emailed on Monday morning.
The demotion follows last week’s firing of political reporter Jessica Kwong on Friday, after the Thanksgiving article was severely mocked online – by both Twitter users, President Donald Trump, and his son Donald Trump Jr.
Many were suspicious when they heard that the reporter had been fired – because regarding the President’s Thanksgiving day plans, the true schedule had been kept highly secret, meaning it was almost impossible for reporters to know that the President was ignoring his official agenda.
Kwong said that she was assigned to write a story about what the President was doing on Thanksgiving a whole week in advance and filed it to her editors on Wednesday.
Then, she said she sent a message to the editor on duty with the President’s latest actions and the editor published the piece, the Washington Examiner wrote last week.
That editor decided to have a reporter write a new story on Trump’s surprise trip to Afghanistan, and neglected to update Kwong’s original piece in a timely manner.
With this information, many thought that if anyone should have been fired for the story it should be the editor and not Kwong herself.
Today, Newsweek has confirmed the demotion of an editor.
