Reddit bans links to Russia state media

In an attempt to show support for Ukraine, Reddit has banned links to Russia’s state-controlled news outlets. The move comes after the platform quarantined the r/Russia community earlier this week.

Some subreddits had already banned links from Russia’s outlets such as Sputnik and RT. However, a platform-wide ban makes it more difficult to share content from these outlets.

Reddit has also banned ads from Russia and those whose target location is Russia. The r/Russia subreddit was also quarantined, meaning it does not appear in recommendations or searches, and its visitors are being shown a warning.

Reddit said the move was a way to show support for Ukraine. The platform says is also trying to fight misinformation about the conflict, and said it has made these decisions to fight “coordinated disinformation attempts.”
