The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) was introduced on October 28, 1998 at a time when the commercially available internet was still fairly new.
The goal of the DMCA was to address online copyright infringement in a way that balances the interests of copyright owners, online service providers, and internet users.
While the DMCA has proved successful when it comes to allowing online service providers to grow without being hindered by constant copyright infringement lawsuits, as the number of independent creators uploading content to the internet has increased, the DMCA has also become a huge threat to online speech.
