EU Digital Identity Regulation
What it does
Regulation 2024/1183 makes every EU member state offer citizens a digital identity wallet by the end of 2026. It ties your national ID to your driver's license, bank details, and diplomas, and requires banks, telecoms, and large platforms to accept it.
Why it matters
Citizens are told the wallet is voluntary while the businesses they rely on are required to take it. That is how a voluntary ID becomes the only practical way to function, and the same wallet is the natural tool for online age checks.
Our take
The law already passed, so the fight now is over scope and safeguards during the rollout. This is where the digital ID push and the age-verification push meet: one wallet to prove who you are, online and off.
