The Two Supreme Court Rulings That Quietly Determined The Future Of The Internet

Impacting free speech.

Although Section 230 is celebrated by supporters from various corners and with different agendas as fundamental in guaranteeing a free internet - there is by now no doubt that this legislation has also become highly controversial, while its interpretations are becoming more and more convoluted.

Today we explore two US Supreme Court rulings that, in effect, had to do with the scope of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA).

This portion of the law passed in 1996 has been interpreted in different ways by both those supporting it and wanting its reform - i.e., an "update" so that the legislation, considered key to a censorship-free internet in the US (although many would disagree), can catch up with the present-day nature of the internet that has changed drastically over the last 30 years.

The central provision that lawmakers put into Section 230 way back when was that online platforms are not legally liable for content posted by their users.
