What is a VPN used for and why do you need one?

Why do I need a VPN?

First, chances are that you’ve already used a VPN connection at least once in your life if you’ve ever worked remotely. Second, even though corporate security was the original reason for VPNs, today they’re mostly used for other things.

The simplest example is streaming of video content – Netflix, Hulu, etc. aren’t available everywhere, and services like NordVPN offer a way to watch your favorite shows without having to be in the US.

If you’re in the US, you may want to watch the Canadian version of Netflix for different shows, for example. Please note, though, that you’d be doing that at your own risk since it’s not usually in line with streaming services’ Ts&Cs.

However, VPNs are about much more than access to your favorite entertainment. Cyber security, higher level of governmental interference in our private lives, and hackers dominating global news stories are probably some of the hottest topics of the last few years.

Unfortunately, the Internet’s very nature makes it vulnerable and by extension, it exposes you. When you’re not using a VPN connection, your IP address is visible to your ISP which makes it possible for the government to track you (whether or not they have laws in place that allow that).

Usage of a VPN can conceal your IP address from such parties and other unwelcome intrusions. If you live in a country that legitimizes censorship, that can be invaluable.

Get Back Your Privacy and Unlock Geo-Specific Content

Cybersecurity can seem complex, but NordVPN makes it as easy as it gets. Use military-grade encryption to shield your Internet activity from hackers and malware, hide your personal IP address, protect yourself on public Wi-Fi, and even unblock region-specific content.
