The Hungarian magnate, George Soros, has stated in an opinion piece for The New York Times that Mark Zuckerberg should not be Facebook’s CEO as he thinks he will use the social network to give Donald Trump an advantage in the upcoming presidential elections.
Social networks played an extremely important role in the 2016 US presidential elections and soon became the main means of advertising for the candidates.
Facebook was one of the most relevant, being a fundamental pillar in Donald Trump’s campaign.
With the next presidential elections coming soon, it seems that the changes made to Facebook in the last four years could benefit President Trump, even more, to be reelected.
At least – that’s what George Soros believes, who says there is a kind of “informal operation” between Facebook and Trump to have each other’s backs.
The billionaire donor and tycoon known for causing massive problems for of the Bank of England, says the problem lies in Facebook’s stance on political content.
The social network does not remove posts made by political candidates of any kind, and Soros wants that to change.
Soros writes:
“Facebook’s decision not to require fact-checking for political candidates’ advertising in 2020 has flung open the door for false, manipulated, extreme and incendiary statements. Such content is rewarded with prime placement and promotion if it meets Facebook-designed algorithmic standards for popularity and engagement.
What’s more, Facebook’s design tends to obscure the sources of inflammatory and false content, and fails to adequately punish those who spread false information. Nor does the company effectively warn those who are exposed to lies.”
