Documentaries should challenge narratives but in today’s world streaming platforms want to do anything but that

? Platforms are scared of pushback.

When people would buy individual documentaries as DVDs or other types of physical media, the store you purchased it from wouldn’t get pushback if the documentary was somewhat controversial. The store was just a distributor.

But, these days, in the age of streaming, a platform streaming a documentary that is considered to be controversial can get enough pushback that they end up removing the movie from the streaming platform altogether. This is particularly a problem with documentaries as most of the more successful documentaries over the years are those that question mainstream narratives and set out to change people’s perception on a certain issue.
