North Dakota’s contact tracing app reveals the dangers of corona surveillance

Contact tracing apps that track coronavirus cases have been a really hot topic lately. We’ve previously explored how? difficult it would be to build a privacy-friendly one even with the best of intentions, and how intentions can change with power.

In early April, North and South Dakota’s governments released a free contact-tracing app called Care19. Their Google PlayStore description implies that the app tracks your location “over the last 5-10 days before testing positive”, but what if you get tested too early or too late? And why 5-10 and not 14?
