Mozilla is pulling the plug on Pocket, its once-popular read-it-later tool, as part of yet another strategic pivot that highlights the organization’s ongoing identity crisis. The service will shut down on July 8, 2025, with users given until October 8 to export their saved content before everything is deleted. Subscriptions will be canceled automatically, with prorated refunds issued to annual plan holders.
Pocket, which started in 2007 and became a core part of Firefox in 2015 before being fully acquired by Mozilla in 2017, was emblematic of Mozilla’s efforts to build a broader ecosystem. Now, with its quiet removal from app stores and browsers, it joins a growing list of initiatives the company has abandoned.
