Titania McGrath, an account created by comedian Andrew Doyle that parodies woke culture and has more than 547,000 followers, has been placed in a restricted mode by Twitter.
As a result of these restrictions, Twitter users who view Titania’s account will be met with a warning notice that says:
“Caution: This account is temporarily restricted.
You’re seeing this warning because there has been some unusual activity from this account. Do you still want to view it?”
Users then have to select the “Yes, view profile” button before they can see Titania’s tweets.
Titania’s tweets are also being replaced with a message stating, “This tweet is unavailable,” in some circumstances. For example, opening any of the replies under Titania’s tweets, hides Titania’s tweets and replaces them with this “unavailable” message.
Additionally, Titania’s account and tweets have been removed from search results with searches for “titania mcgrath” and “@TitaniaMcGrath” only returning copycat accounts or tweets from other users about Titania McGrath.
Titania’s Twitter account has been placed in this restricted mode before and it has also been hit with a temporary suspension over one of its satirical tweets but Doyle tweeted that this time, he “suspects she might not be reinstated.”
Twitter has also suspended several other popular parody accounts since 2019 including @AOCPress, a parody of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and @elbloombito, a parody of businessman Michael Bloomberg which was suspended just before he announced his 2020 presidential campaign and then later reinstated.
In addition to cracking down on parody accounts, Twitter has made it increasingly difficult to post satirical memes on the platform by introducing rules that censor memes that are flagged as “manipulated media” and taking down several memes of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden for violating the rules about “posting misleading information about voting.”
