YouTube has announced that it has demonetized 14 Brazilian content creators over “election misinformation.”
The channels had been accused by the country’s Superior Electoral Court of promoting incorrect information.
The Alphabet-owned company had this to say in a press release: “We reinforce our committedness to collaborating with the enactment of authorities in Brazil and to proceed to put successful policies, resources and products to support the YouTube assemblage from harmful content.”
Last week, the electoral justice inspector general, Luis Felipe Salomão, ordered YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram (owned by Facebook) to block payments to accounts that push “disinformation about the Brazilian electoral system.”
President Bolsonaro has been questioning the integrity of the election process and several of his supporters on social media have been doing the same.
Bolsonaro supporters are regularly censored on social media platforms, including Bolsonaro himself.
This summer, YouTube said it had removed videos from Bolsonaro’s channel for spreading “misinformation” about the coronavirus, almost a year after Twitter and Facebook made similar accusations.
