SNP MP Joanna Cherry and Tory MSP Murdo Fraser are among the political and media figures supporting Free Speech Union Scotland ahead of its launch. The purpose of the organization is to support freedom of expression.

Free Speech Union was created two years ago by social commentator Toby Young.

Free Speech Scotland will officially launch this month, and has received the support of multiple political figures and media personalities, including MP Joanna Cherry and MSP Murdo Fraser.

Cherry, who joined the organization’s advisory board, tweeted: “I’m pleased to join cross-party politicians, writers and academics on the advisory board of the Free ⁦@SpeechUnion⁩ as it launches in Scotland.

“It’s important to resist inroads on our right to #FreedomOfSpeech under Art. 10 #ECHR.”

Cherry referenced Article 10 of the EU’s European Convention on Human Rights, which states: “Everyone has the right to freedom of expression.”

Fraser also tweeted in support of the organization, but it is not clear if he will be on its advisory board. He wrote: “Delighted to be supporting the Free Speech Union in Scotland – defending free speech is now more important than ever.”
