Amazon has removed the bestselling book “When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment” without giving its author, Ryan T. Anderson, any notice or explanation.
Anderson is the President of the Ethics & Public Policy Center which describes itself as “D.C.’s premier think tank dedicated to applying the Judeo-Christian moral tradition to critical issues of public policy.”
The book was released in February 2018 and reveals what Anderson describes as “a grim contrast between the media’s sunny depiction and the often sad realities of gender-identity struggles” and “various contradictions at the heart of this moment.”
It has been featured on several bestsellers lists including The Washington Post’s DC paperback nonfiction bestsellers list where it reached number three and Amazon’s “New Releases in Natural Law” bestsellers list where it reached number one.
Anderson told the Daily Caller that he noticed the book was unavailable on Sunday.
“No one from Amazon notified me or my publisher,” Anderson said. “My publisher has reached out, but still no response.”
Anderson suggested that the removal of his book was because he was challenging a “new orthodoxy.”
“It’s not about how you say it, it’s not about how rigorously you argue it, it’s not about how charitably you present it,” he said. “It’s about whether you dissent from a new orthodoxy.”
Anderson also noted that the book was removed during the same week that the US House of Representatives may pass the Equality Act. Anderson has warned that this bill “would act as a sword — to persecute those who don’t embrace newfangled gender ideologies.”
While Amazon has removed Anderson’s book, a book that responds directly to Anderson’s book, “Let Harry Become Sally: Responding to the Anti-Transgender Moment,” is still listed for sale on the platform.
The removal of When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment means that Anderson can no longer sell his book on a platform that reportedly accounts for 50% of all print book sales in the US and 83% of ebook sales in the US.
Anderson is the latest of several authors to have their books banned after challenging the narratives that are often pushed by transgender activists.
In November, “The End of Gender” by Dr. Debra Soh and “Irreversible Damage” by Abigail Shrier were both temporarily removed from Target’s website before being reinstated.
Amazon also banned several books in 2020 including “Covid-19 and the Agendas to Come: Red-Pilled” by James Perloff, “China Virus” by Ezra Levant, and “Unreported Truths about COVID-19 and Lockdowns: Part 1” by Alex Berenson. Levant and Berenson’s books were subsequently reinstated.
