Australia Digital ID Act 2024
What it does
The Digital ID Act put the Australian Government Digital ID System on a statutory footing: accredited providers, government services connected first, and a phased expansion that opens participation to accredited private-sector entities from November 30, 2026. The statute calls digital ID voluntary, with exceptions written into section 74 itself, and the under-16 ban plus the age-check codes are building the demand the ID conveniently meets.
Why it matters
Australia is running the full stack: a national ID system on one track, and laws requiring age ID checks across platforms, search, and devices on the other. Voluntary holds only until the checks the other laws require make the ID the path of least resistance, the same convergence Britain is building with its Data Act and BritCard.
Our take
This law creates the credential; the age-check codes and the under-16 ban create the daily need for it. November 2026, when private services can plug in, is when the two meet.
