Mullvad runs a free public encrypted DNS resolver that needs no account and no payment, you simply set a device to one of six hostnames, from a plain no-filter resolver to variants that block ads, trackers, malware, adult, or social content. It supports DoH and DoT (but not DNSCrypt or DoQ) and the servers run entirely in RAM so nothing is written to disk. Mullvad logs nothing and backs that up with independent audits by Assured, including of its DNS infrastructure. It operates under Swedish jurisdiction, with resolver servers spread across several countries. The catch is scope: this is a bare resolver with no dashboard or per-device rules, you pick a variant and that is your filtering.
Mullvad is shutting down this service. It asks users to switch before November 2, 2026, and recommends Quad9 instead. Do not set it up on new devices.
Strengths
- No account, no payment, no logging
- Independently audited; servers run in RAM
- Six filtering variants to choose from
Considerations
- Shutting down: switch before November 2, 2026
- No dashboard or custom rules
- DoH/DoT only, no DNSCrypt or DoQ
