The FBI Wants More Mass Surveillance But Can’t Keep Your Data Safe

With a questionable record on data security, the FBI seeks even more surveillance power.

The FBI's hunger for data is perhaps matched only by its suspect, to say the least handling of the vast amounts it already has, a recent management advisory memo penned by Department of Justice (DoJ) Inspector General Michael Horowitz suggests.

The memo criticizes the agency, which at this point has more information at its disposal than ever before due to the slow shift from a domestic law enforcement role closer to that of the NSA, thus gaining access to its massive trove of spy data.

One mechanism for the FBI to get there is particularly controversial since it involves the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Section 702 which enabled the NSA to collect information from foreigners and US persons communicating with them. Many believe the FBI was abusing this section.

Either lawful or otherwise, this has most certainly resulted in the agency having amassed more data than ever. And then the question must arise as to how well it is protected.
