KeePassXC is for people who don’t want their passwords living on anyone else’s server. It stores everything in a single encrypted .kdbx file on your own computer, using strong ciphers like AES and ChaCha20 with Argon2 key derivation and a browser extension autofills logins on the desktop. Because there’s no cloud, there’s nothing to breach remotely but syncing between devices is up to you (via your own file sync) and there are no official mobile apps so you’ll pair it with KeePassDX on Android or KeePassium on iOS. It’s a community-driven project with no company behind it and an independent audit in 2023 found no major problems. If you value control and zero recurring cost over convenience, it’s hard to beat.

Strengths

  • Free and fully open source
  • Data never leaves your device
  • Strong, modern encryption
  • No account or subscription

Considerations

  • You handle your own syncing and backups
  • No official mobile app
  • Less beginner-friendly than cloud services
