MetaGer comes from SUMA-EV, a German nonprofit working with the University of Hannover. There are no shareholders pulling at it. It queries several engines and merges the results. The code is open source under the AGPL. A built-in proxy can open a result without exposing you to the site. Basic search is free and ad-supported. A membership or an anonymous Key removes the ads and covers heavier use. It rides other engines rather than its own index.
