DuckDuckGo is where most people start with private search. It's the most widely used option here by a distance. It doesn't track you or build a profile. There are apps and extensions for every platform. Its web results come mostly from Bing rather than a homegrown index. The company is US-based. In 2022 it drew criticism over a Microsoft deal that let some Microsoft trackers through, which it later removed. For everyday use it's perfectly sound, though the more independent engines here go further.
Strengths
- Easiest mainstream private search, no tracking or profiling
- Apps and extensions for every platform
- Strong tracker blocking in its own browser and extensions
Considerations
- Web results come mostly from Bing, not an independent index
- Drew criticism in 2022 over a Microsoft-tracker agreement, since amended
