YouTube, Snapchat, Gmail, Nest, Discord, and many more web services have suffered an outage across the United States today. Many of the services use Google’s Cloud for many of their operations and so it’s likely that the origin of the issue is with Google’s hosting services, which a growing number of websites and services rely on for delivering content and more.
According to Google Cloud’s status page, the issues began at around 3:25PM Eastern Time.
Looking at outage maps, it appears that the outage is mostly affecting those on the East Coast of the US, but there are numerous reports from European users that are having issues with YouTube and Gmail.
Discord users are finding that they’re having issues logging into the app and that their chat messages aren’t getting through.
This is the third major related outage in the last year – with previous incidents in both January 2019 and October 2018. YouTube fans may remember that earlier this year, YouTube was down for 30 minutes. It looks as though this outage is going to beat that record.
These are the kinds of major outages that are to be experienced when a large proportion of the internet is all hosted and serviced by one company.
