Mainstream media outlets are granted the title of "authoritative" by Big Tech companies based on the premise that they provide accurate, reliable, fact-based information.
YouTube's blog post explaining why it boosts these so-called authoritative sources states that "accuracy and authoritativeness are key" and "that's why we've re-doubled our efforts to raise authoritative sources to the top."
The post adds: "Reliable information becomes especially critical as news is breaking. But as events are unfolding, it can take time to produce high-quality videos containing verified facts. So we've started providing short previews of text-based news articles in search results on YouTube, along with a reminder that breaking and developing news can rapidly change."
And being given the Big Tech seal of approval as an authoritative source comes with significant benefits that aren't granted to independent YouTube creators.
