CalyxOS sits between LineageOS and GrapheneOS: a de-Googled Android for Pixel, Fairphone and some Motorola phones that ships microG and privacy tools out of the box so most apps work without real Google services. It keeps verified boot on Pixels and aims for prompt security updates. Development paused in mid-2025 after key staff left and updates stalled for months. Official releases resumed in July 2026, and CalyxOS 8, based on Android 17, began rolling out to most Pixels on October 1, 2026, and reached Fairphone, Motorola and SHIFTphone devices later in October. The Fairphone 6 is now a fully supported device. It trades some of GrapheneOS's hardening for broader device support and convenience. A reasonable de-Googled option, just confirm your device is actively receiving updates before you rely on it.
Strengths
- De-Googled with microG built in
- Verified boot on Pixel devices
- Covers Pixel, Fairphone and some Motorola
Considerations
- Development stalled through a 2025 hiatus
- Weaker hardening than GrapheneOS
- Confirm your device still gets updates
