PricingFree and open source; it installs as an app on your own Nextcloud server so your only cost is the hosting you already run.

Memories is a photo management app that installs on your own Nextcloud server, turning stored images and videos into a fast, scrollable timeline. It adds features the built-in Photos app lacks, including a world map of geotagged shots, on-device face recognition, albums, and tag-based browsing. Because you host it yourself, your library never touches a third-party cloud, though it is not end-to-end encrypted by default so privacy comes from control of the server rather than encryption. Companion Android and iOS apps handle automatic phone backup to your instance. It is free and open source under the AGPL, maintained by developer Varun Patil.

Strengths

  • Runs on hardware you control, keeping photos off third-party clouds
  • Fast timeline with maps, face recognition, albums, and tags
  • Free and open source (AGPL) with auto-backup mobile apps

Considerations

  • Not end-to-end encrypted; privacy depends on a secured server
  • Requires running and maintaining your own Nextcloud instance
