Proton VPN is the rare provider whose free tier has no data cap, covering around ten countries, with a paid plan that holds up as an all-rounder. You get open-source apps everywhere, independent audits, a Swiss base, and good speeds on its own network. If you already use Proton Mail or Drive, it shares the same account. The free plan is held to a subset of countries and the paid plan is not the cheapest. For most people it is still the one to beat.
Strengths
- Genuinely free, unlimited-data tier
- Open-source clients on every platform
- Independently audited
- Bundles with Proton Mail / Drive accounts
Considerations
- Free tier is limited to a subset of countries
- Paid plan pricier than budget rivals
