Zodl, formerly Zashi, is a free, self-custody mobile wallet dedicated to Zcash (ZEC), built by the core engineers who created the Zcash protocol. Unlike most crypto wallets, it defaults to shielded transactions, using Zcash's zero-knowledge proofs to keep balances, amounts, and transaction history off the public ledger. It can also route its network traffic through Tor to mask your IP address and reduce metadata leakage and the developers state they do not see, collect, or track wallet activity. The app is open source under the MIT license and its F-Droid build is reproducible so anyone can independently verify it. In 2026 the team spun out of the Electric Coin Company and rebranded the wallet from Zashi to Zodl, though it remains the same codebase and team. The main trade-offs are that it is Zcash-only, mobile-only, and that its strongest privacy applies only to shielded funds so transparent ZEC transactions stay publicly visible on-chain.
