The EU is proceeding with plans to switch citizens in the bloc to a digital identity wallet in the next year and a half.
This means that with the eIDAS 2.0 scheme that should be in place by September of next year, people in the 27 European countries that are members of the EU should stop using physical IDs and will instead have all their information necessary for travel, taking up residence, or getting a job centralized in one digital identity framework that will live on their phones.
