Filen pairs open-source clients with zero-knowledge encryption. Files are encrypted on your device before they upload. The desktop, mobile, and CLI apps are open source. There is a 10 GB free tier, though accounts created over a VPN or proxy do not get it. The backend server code is not open. If you want an auditable client with files encrypted before they leave your machine, it is a strong pick.

Strengths

  • Zero-knowledge encryption, with files encrypted before upload
  • Open-source clients across desktop, mobile and CLI
  • 10 GB free tier

Considerations

  • Server backend is not open source
  • Lifetime plans no longer sold to new buyers
  • No crypto payments; card or PayPal only
  • Free storage may be withheld from accounts created over a VPN, Tor or proxy
