Mailfence added at-rest encryption to its mail store in 2025. The keys are still its own. Anything that arrives or is sent in plain text stays readable to it. The bigger structural issue is that Belgium has mandatory data-retention rules that appear to reach email providers. Parts of the suite are also closed source. The draw is the built-in PGP keystore, which gives you managed OpenPGP right inside webmail.
